The Story
In April 2020, I was alarmed by the rise in domestic violence due to the pandemic. I began to draw the females around me, and began donating the proceeds to Refuge UK, with a target of raising £100. Now, 18 months later… I have raised nearly £15,000 and the community continues to grow every day. As an ambassador for both Refuge and Girls Rise UP, I aim to use lock down ladies as a unique and creative way to promote women’s empowerment for the future.
The Exhibition
In late July 2021, Lock down ladies held its first solo exhibition. Taking place over 1 week at Hackney Downs Studios supported by Eat Work Art and donating all proceeds to Solace Women’s Aid. After nearly 18 months of lock down ladies, I wanted to collate every woman I had drawn and display the heart felt messages I have heard along the way. The event managed to raise over £1,500 for the charity, and also asked visitors.. “What makes you feel empowered?”
